Geared motors are a type of DC (direct current) motor, where a gear assembly is attached to the motor to increase the torque and reduce the speed.

They work by converting electrical energy to mechanical energy, with the speed of the motor being changed by a variable supply voltage. Geared motors are used within any electronic items that require gears, for example electric bikes and golf buggies.
Geared motors are either brushed or brushless; both of these types of geared motors use magnets to drive the spinning rotary motion of the motor, but both differ in terms of suitability for different applications. Brushed DC geared motors tend to be lower in cost and are often used in applications with simpler control systems. Brushless DC geared motors however tend to have a longer lifespan and greater efficiency. They are often used in compressors, fans or pumps.
