Linear Actuator Types

Linear Actuators are part of our motion control product range. They are used within various applications and industries to convert rotary action into linear motion.

There are different types of linear actuators available, we have a wide range of different styles and configurations.

Linear Actuator Types

There are different types of linear actuator available. The types we have on offer at Heason are; Precision Ball Screw Actuators, Industrial Linear Actuators and Rodless Actuators.

Precision Ball Screw Actuators

Precision ball screw actuators operate using precision rolled screws with recirculating ball nuts. The extension rod is also guided and can take lateral loads.

  • Efficiency: 90%
  • Repeatability: 0.001mm
  • Load capacities: up to 60kN

Precision Ball Screws are well suited for applications in areas such as;

  • Automation
  • Packaging
  • Machine Tools
  • Electronics Assemblies
  • R&D
  • Testing Applications.

To achieve the required level of control for your application, we can match our precision ball screw actuators with suitable servo or stepper motors. Please contact us directly for more information on compatible servo or stepper motors.

Industrial Linear Actuators

Industrial linear actuators are the preferred choice for applications involving high loads but with relatively slow speeds.

  • Thrust Capacities: 16kN
  • Strokes up to 1000mm
  • End of stroke limits
  • Potentiometer and encoder feedback
  • CAN bus J1939

Industrial linear actuators are used as a low-cost alternative to hydraulic or pneumatic cylinders for applications where compact, high force is required such as;

  • Mobile Off-highway
  • Agricultural vehicles
  • Military equipment
  • Manual lift systems.

Industrial linear actuators are available integrated DC or AC motors, typically 12VDC to 36VDC. They are also usually self- locking so loads can be safely held even if power is lost.

Rodless Actuators

Rodless actuators use either ball screws, lead screws or belts to drive a guided carriage up to 12m stroke length.

  • Dynamic load capability: 34000N
  • Repeatability: 0.01mm
  • Speed: up to 10m/s

Rodless Actuators are also well known for high accuracy and are self-supporting meaning they require minimal engineering to incorporate into machine design. Added guidance systems allow high moment loads.

Rodless Actuators are used in applications including;

  • Packaging
  • Factory automation
  • Lab automation
  • Material handling
  • Medical applications

We have extensive calculation and design tools to pair any of our linear systems to a suitable servo or stepper motor to achieve the motion required. We can also design and supply complete assembled multi-axis systems.

Where are Linear Actuators Used?

Linear actuators are vital components for applications where lifting, lowering, sliding, adjusting and/or tilting is involved. They are highly versatile devices and are present in a multitude of industries.

Some areas of use for Linear Actuators include;

  • Food processing (Where specialised washdown variants are available)
  • Factory automation
  • Materials handling
  • Marine applications
  • Printing and packaging
  • Automotive inc Mobile off-highway vehicles
  • Defence
  • Machine tool
  • Aerospace
  • Pharmaceutical applications

Linear Actuator Benefits

Linear Actuators are well suited to applications where simple, safe and clean movements are required, they offer accurate and smooth motion control even in harsh environments.

Benefits of linear actuators include: -

  • Long Life
  • Low operating costs
  • Energy Efficient
  • Rugged and reliable
  • Quiet operation
  • High repeatability
  • Easy installation (when compared to hydraulic or pneumatic systems)
  • Little to no maintenance required
