What is a Servo Motor Used for?

What is a Servo Motor used for? Servo motors have many uses within motion control. They are used in applications to control rotational speed and position as well as output torque.

What is Servo Motor?

Servo motors, also referred to as “servos” are self-contained electrical devices used within motion control. They contain a brushless rotary electric motor and a rotational feedback device.

We have been a supplier of servo motors for many years – our full range is available to view on our website.

Servo motors are highly diverse, they are smooth running with low cogging and are relatively compact in relation to their torque output. This makes them well suited to a range of applications.

Why choose a Servo Motor?

Servo motors have many benefits and are often selected for the following reasons;

  • Highly efficient
  • Highly reliable
  • High accuracy
  • Suitable for harsh environments
  • High acceleration
  • Smooth running
  • Small in size
  • Quiet operation
  • Closed-loop control
  • High ratio of torque to inertia
  • Cost saving

What is a Servo Motor Used for?

Servo motors are very diverse and as well as being used throughout a wide range of industries for various applications they can also be used for more commonplace applications such as toys and home electronics.

Within specific industries, servo motors are used to replace conventional AC motors, stepper motors and hydraulic and pneumatic systems.

Servo Motor uses include;

Robotics – Servo motors are lightweight and small which makes them ideal for use in this upcoming industry.

Simulation Applications – another modern industry which involves the use of Servo motors. Their desired features for simulation applications include speed, torque and smoothness.

Defence – within defence applications servo motors are exposed to harsh environments including high temperatures and high shock loads.

Machine Tools – Machine tool applications rely heavily on the high accuracy servo motors provide.

Printing Press – within printing press applications, servo motors are often selected for their high accuracy and speed.

Conveyer and Handling Systems - Servo Motors are often selected for their high speed, high accuracy and torque.

Food and Beverage – We have a range of servo motors which are suitable for use in washdown environments with constant temperature changes.

Subsea and Oil & Gas - Servo motors are exposed to high pressure, high temperatures and may have explosion proof requirements for this environment.

Our Range of Servo Motors

Our range of servo motors come from our suppliers Kollmorgen and ABB, the full range is available to view on our website.

Our servo motors can cover any application in a variety of applications including extreme environments.

Our portfolio also includes a selection of compatible servo and stepper drives which deliver high quality results even in the most demanding applications.
