Stepper Motor Applications

Stepper motors form part of our product portfolio within our Motors section. Stepper motors are brushless synchronous electric motors which are used to convert digital pulses into mechanical shaft rotation. The rotation is made up of a precise number of steps, hence the name Stepper Motor.

Different stepper motors have different numbers of steps. These can be extremely precise, we have a range which has up to 200 steps, which equates to just 1.8° per step.

Stepper Motor Applications

Stepper motors are particularly well suited to applications where control signals appear as digital pulses rather than analogue voltages. They are often used for the following types of applications;

Positioning Applications – because stepper motors move in precise steps, they can be highly accurate and therefore one of the best solutions for positioning applications

Low Speed Torque – other types of motors do not offer much torque at low speeds whereas a stepper motor has maximum torque at low speeds which makes them suitable for low speed torque applications.

Speed Control Applications – the precise increments allow for exceptional control of rotational speeds which are vital in many different applications and industries.

Stepper motor applications include;

  • Robotics
  • Machine tools
  • Pick and place machines
  • Automated wire cutting
  • Wire bonding machines
  • Precise fluid control devices

Stepper Motor Advantages

Stepper motors are a popular choice for the above applications because of the following advantages

  • Low maintenance
  • High accuracy
  • Easy to set up and install
  • Good repeatability
  • Good repeatability
  • Low cost
