Gearbox Types

Within our product portfolio, we have many different gearbox types.

Our gearboxes are used within a range of diverse industry sectors and are suitable for various applications.

What is a Gearbox?

A gearbox is an input device used within motion control. It is an enclosed system that transmits mechanical energy into an output device. A gearbox can modify the ratio of attributes including speed and torque, as well as the rate of rotation that is sent to the output device.

Gearboxes are also referred to as gearheads or gear reducers and are used in all aspects of motion control, ranging from robotics to conveyor systems, elevators to industrial equipment – the list is endless!

Gearbox Types

Within our portfolio we offer three different gearbox types; Planetary Gearboxes, Worm Gearboxes and Zero Backlash Gearboxes. Each gearbox type has its own attributes that make it suitable for specific applications.

Type 1. Zero Backlash Gearbox – a zero-backlash gearbox is a high precision reduction gearbox that is well suited to demanding applications. These gearboxes offer a great torque to weight ratio, high precision and high linearity of torsional characteristics.

Type 2. Planetary Gearbox – a planetary gearbox is often selected for its high accuracy and is well suited to high precision applications. The range we offer comes from our supplier Thomson and are ideal for applications that require high endurance, in particular robotics and 3D printing. There are different types of planetary gearboxes including solid or hollow format.

Type 3. Worm Gears – worm gears can also be referred to as wheel gearboxes. They are designed with different thread profiles to allow the worm to push or pull as a wheel rotates. They have fewer moving parts but still, have the ability to obtain large ratios. Wheel gearboxes are known for their low maintenance and accurate results.

Where are Gearboxes used?

Gearboxes are used within large motion control devices. Depending on the gear ratio, some of the more well-known applications for gearboxes include the centre of a wind turbine, transmission within automobiles and even in fairground Ferris wheels.

Other more industrial applications for gearboxes:

  • Conveyers
  • Cranes
  • Cooling towers
  • Packaging machinery
  • Elevators
  • Feeders
  • Robotics
  • Security
  • Machine tools
  • Navigation
